“The podcast experience” Learning or Just Listening?!?!

Today I attended a presentation at mLearnCon by Mr. Rick Nielsen, an E-Learning Developer and Instructional Designer who has been podcasting for 4 years. I was expecting a presentation titled Making a Podcast a Learning Experience – Not Just a Listening Experience, but instead he decided it would be called “The podcast experience” Learning or Just Listening?!?!… not much a difference between titles but it was definitely an unexpected and pleasant presentation experience! I subscribe to and listen to several podcasts so there’s no question … I have experienced them, appreciate them, enjoy -some of- them, and learn from them…in short as an audience member I see the importance and objective of these audio/video media outlets but what about as a podcast producer?

I haven’t been able to get a good grasp for selling it to my faculty members as using it to as a method for delivering content. How do I -in plain english- explain to faculty how and why they should use podcasting as a means for teaching? How would they use, design, and develop podcasts to make an effective impact on the learner and material? Where do they start in a world of eLearning and mLearning they may not be experience or comfortable with? Well… thank you Mr. Nielsen… You’ve made it easier for me to address these and so many other basic concerns!

The presentation description provided by the mLearnCon website read as follows:

Podcasting was one of the early types of approaches used to deliver content to mobile devices. But not all Podcasts provide instruction. Developing and delivering a Podcast that provides effective instruction, and at the same time is entertaining, can be a very effective learning tool.

Participants in this session will learn the factors that you must consider when developing and delivering a Podcast that are necessary to achieving appropriate learning objectives. You will discover a learning medium that allows your learners to listen to your content and instruction where and when they find it most convenient — in the car, the shower, or at the gym.

In this session, you will learn:

- How to keep audience attention

- How to access audience comprehension

- What the factors are that play in to good instructional Podcast design

- What not to do when developing a Podcast.

Audience: Appropriate for all levels, and no specific prior knowledge is required.

Technologies discussed in this session: iPhone, iPod, or other portable media devices.

Even though he didn’t directly address ‘what not to do when developing podcast’, or the specifics of any real/tangible topic, he addressed so much more!

I believe he plans to publish this presentation as a podcast but in the event he doesn’t or if you’re not into that sort of thing, here’s a recap for those of you who aren’t able to see and hear this presentation in person. He begins the presentation by mentioning there are options for Public vs. Private Podcasts, which there’s not much difference between and a basic -yet effective- definition of Podcast, the automation of time shifted portable media which is *Automated, *Time Shifted, *Portable, *Multi-Media Capable.

– Podcast Essentials – *Pay Attention!!!*

Podcast Strategy – clearly define your podcast purpose and audience.
Episode Structure – have a structure your audience can expect and focus better.
- Intro (Current Events & News), Featured
- Segment (Main Topic), Outro (Post Listener Action – *PLA)
  * Example: Comment on your blog/podcast or sign up for mailing list *
Episode Continuity – transition from one episode to another
Build on concepts so the auidence will continue to grow in understand/objectives.
Episode Consistently – have a podcast schedule audience can count; Publish your podcast weekly/monthy, make schedule known, and publish ON TIME as expected!
* Even if ‘hey this is what i know now, more to come…”
Episode Length – there are benchmarks
Establish an episode length so that whatever is published can be listened to in one sitting
* If episodes are too long/broken-up, your audience will probably not come back and hear the remainder of the information.
* If you don’t use/add PLA – what a bummer… You could be missing out on audience commitment, trust, interaction, and feedback.
Episode Format – choose a format that best meets the audience needs for effectiveness.
* There are various podcast/episode formats – the most common are:

Monologue – Not as easy as it sounds
Dialog – Easier to produce
Roundtable – Keep your voices in order…
Make sure you have male/female and different accents so the audience doesn’t get them confused.
Interview – Audiences love these…

Learning Objectives and Study Aids can be provided via podcast…
Before you can train someone, you have to get their attention…
When on the web, use good titles to pique curiosity…
After you get thier attention, you need their permission for other effective communication…
Get the audience feedback, give them a shout out, interact and engage through other forums!
Ex: Twitter (see: #Learnchat), Facebook, Forums, Seminars, Webinars, etc…
Build valuable relationships and influences; your audience will listen, learn, and contribute!
Pulling it all Together…
Get attention, permisssion, engagement (through lists, feedback, involvement/interaction)
Continue to deliver great content, building trust, relationships and influence in your community!!!

Data suggest that 80 percent of professors, with little variance by age, have at least one account with either Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Skype, LinkedIn, MySpace, Flickr, Slideshare, or Google Wave. Nearly 60 percent kept accounts with more than one, and a quarter used at least four. A majority, 52 percent, said they used at least one of them as a teaching tool.
